Between 1910 and 1960 anarchists in the US established more than twenty schools - Modern Schools - where children might study in an atmosphere of freedom and self reliance in contrast to the discipline of the traditional classroom. Participants included Emma Goldman, Margaret Sanger, Alexander Berkman and Man Ray. Includes interviews with surviving Modern School Pupils.

The First Edition was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize (Biography) in 1981. This edition introduced by Barry Pateman.

Paul Avrich was Professor of History at Queens College and the Graduate School of the City University of New York.
